The EN1366-1 standard provides for various types of ducts that differ by virtue of the propagation from inside or outside to the fire duct (iào, ißo) and the vertical or horizontal arrangement of the duct (ve-ho ). The fire resistance classification is provided as the time limit (in minutes 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 180 etc.) during which the performance criteria are met in specific standardized fire tests. The fire resistance criteria for crossings are similar to those adopted for the construction elements of buildings, namely:

  • Integrity (E) is the ability of a sample of a tested item to prevent the passage of flames and hot gases through the side exposed to the fire and prevent the occurrence of flames on the unexposed side.

  • Insulation (I) defines the ability to keep the temperature rise of the unexposed area below specified levels.

  • Smoke tightness (S) defines the passage of fire fumes to the side not exposed to the fire.

Depending on the type of installation, ventilation ducts with suitable fire-fighting performance must be chosen.
Paroc has developed an incombustible product quilted on mesh that is usually coated with black lacquered aluminum sheet interposed between wool and mesh for the fire protection of vertical and horizontal ventilation ducts.
